The Ministry Context

We are an evangelical church serving part of the Somerset town of Bridgwater. We have one main congregation and several mid-week meetings. Our aims as a church are to reach all in Wembdon and Bridgwater, to build up believers, and to send workers into God's world. Ed Moll was appointed minister in 2007 and works alongside a part-time paid Pastoral Assistant and a Ministry Trainee. We are committed to putting the Bible at the heart of all we do, and with the fruits of the ‘Passion for Life' mission in 2010, this is an exciting time to be involved in the growth and development of our church's life.

The Ministry Trainee scheme at St George's will particularly suit someone with a hunger to experience all-round ‘parish' ministry in an ‘ordinary' town, and a heart to serve Christ. St George's is lively enough to have lots going on, yet small enough for you to be able to see and experience something of every area. We think this setting will either suit a second-year apprentice wanting to build on previous experience, or a capable person wanting to experience a little of all-round ministry. There will be considerable opportunities available to the Ministry Trainee, and one to one mentoring by Ed to provide guidance and help.

Our Ministry Trainee scheme can be tailored to the individual: we are looking for the right person, rather than seeking to fill a specific shape or gap. We will however still aim to offer the three main elements of ministry training, namely opportunities to develop character, knowledge and competence.

Character

You will meet regularly with the Minister to read the Bible, pray, and discuss ministry issues. We will be looking to develop a faithful, grateful servant heart. Membership of the church family, and of the teams you serve within, will also be important in shaping your godly character.

Knowledge/Training

Specific training in Doctrine and Bible teaching is provided by the South West Gospel Partnership Ministry Training course which meets in Bath one day a week. This has tracks for both first year and second year apprentices.

One conference in the year, such as a 9:38 Apprentices conference.

Additional training if needed can be provided in Wembdon by following courses from Moore College or Open Bible Institute.

Competence/Ministry Opportunity

We want you to have the chance to see all-round ministry, and to be able to serve and lead in some of these contexts. As there are opportunities in every area of church life, we can tailor this to your gifts and strengths and weaknesses. But we would be looking to give opportunities to experience, and be supported, in the following:

  • Give talks or preach
  • Participate in and lead small group Bible Studies
  • Serve as part of a team in ministry
  • Be involved with a Pathfinder or CYFA Venture (or similar) linked to the work here.

Practical Details

We will be ready to start when you are. September 2010 would be fine, but if you have different timings in mind, do discuss these with us.

We expect to be able to cover your training, accommodation and basic living costs. If you can raise some funds yourself (eg from your home church) that will of course be a great help.

What to do next

Get in touch with Ed Moll (01278 423647 and ed@sgw.org.uk) for a chat initially. Come and visit if you want to see more (find us at www.sgw.org.uk). And pray with us that God will open the right door for the right person.
