Female Lay Assistant - youth work trainee

An ideal Training opportunity!

This is an ideal training parish for anyone considering full-time Christian work in a local church.  There are 450 people attending St. John's Church on a Sunday - 150 of these are under 18.  There is a staff of 8 including a honorary curate, youth Work-co-ordinator, children's work co-ordinator, families work co-ordinator, pastoral work co-ordinator, and music co-ordinator.  You would be serving in a very strong supportive context.  However, this is not just a training post - more a chance to serve in a local church.  You would be working alongside the youth work co-ordinator in particular.

About the job

There will naturally be a degree of flexibility over responsibilities, tailored to your past experience, but the main areas where you will gain invaluable experience include:

  • Leadership - Being part of the staff team  - Working alongside the volunteer staff in the two older youth groups (11-18 year olds)
  • Speaking - at School assemblies, CU's in the many schools in the area, leading a homegroup, in church when appropriate
  • Discipleship - Personal work with young people
  • Music - support the music co-ordinator in forming a youth band  if this is of interest
  • Evangelism - leading a ‘Christianity Explored' course for young people
  • Organisation - organisational responsibility for at least one activity
  • Study - one of the Moore College Course modules
  • Summer Houseparties - taking a group of leaders and young people on a Cyfa or SU houseparty to consolidate training, etc.

Nb: We want to be realistic about what you are asked to do - but we hope that you will play a significant role, in line with your gifts, in the leadership and teaching of young people.   We hope that you will be prepared to be flexible and help in practical ways as we seek to win our community for Christ.

About St. John's Church

St. John's is located right at the cross roads of a large area of mixed middle-class housing in Wimborne.  It is a mainstream evangelical church.  Our purpose is to bring people to faith in Christ and help people become fully devoted disciples of Christ.  Our priorities include teaching the Bible clearly and practically; keeping the prayer central to our lives; helping children and young people to grow in their understanding and faith; encouraging mature discipleship in every adult.  In particular, the Church has a vital ministry to many young people in Wimborne.

Conditions of Service and Finance

We will use the terms of conditions set by St Ebbe's Oxford for their lay assistants as the bench mark.  We will provide you with accommodation in a self-contained flat in the home of one of the church wardens.  We will provide a generous living allowance and all car and other expenses will be covered.

Contacts details and dates

We would like you to start in September 2010.  Please phone Richard Tulloch on 01202 883490 or email rjatulloch@gmail.com.  You can get a feel for what we are like as a church from our website:  www.stjohnsinfo.org.uk
