Jess served as a trainee as a city-centre church with over 500 members.
What part of your traineeship most encouraged you in your faith, and why?
The one-to-one mentorship was a highlight for me. To have someone to regularly meet with and discuss your faith is an incredible gift.
What particularly challenged you as a ministry trainee?
I think a lot of church workers struggle with a works-based theology of serving the church. It is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking your service to God is measured by how well you do something. The apprenticeship was a formational time to discover service through grace.
Would you recommend becoming a ministry trainee? If so, why?
Yes! It is a massive privilege to serve the church full-time. Whilst I felt that God was calling me into the workplace, the theological grounding and support I received has been a blessing to my faith.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out as an ministry trainee?
Gain as much wisdom as you can from older members of the congregation – God will teach you through these people!!
Do you have a 9:38 story? We would love to hear from you!
