Book Review: The Call
Nine Thirty Eight
“If you’ve just begun to consider whether you’ve been called to gospel ministry you may feel excited, confused or even overwhelmed. It can be tricky to know where to start!’
This book, “The Call” by Trevor Archer and Paul Mallard is a great little book to help those who are considering whether full-time ministry is what God has in store for them.
It helpfully begins by talking a bit about the concept of “being called” and the balance between whether this is a subjective feeling someone has or whether it’s something that can be objectively analysed. It then continues by laying out 12 marks to look for in a person called to gospel ministry. These range from a love for God's word and a love for God's people to their relationships with other people. It poses useful questions to ask of yourself and to discuss with your family or church leaders.
The book also helpfully gives practical advice about what different routes into ministry are available and the variety of areas of ministry that are available too.
This is a very short book that could be read in a couple of hours but it’s jam-packed full of useful advice and guidance.
This is a very short book that could be read in a couple of hours but it’s jam-packed full of useful advice and guidance. If you’ve ever considered whether full-time ministry is what God is calling you to, or if someone in your church is telling you that you should be considering it, then this is a great place to start.
This could also be a really useful book for all of those who are currently Ministry Trainees and are wanting something to help them pray and consider whether this is something they are being called to long-term.
