Maximise Speaker – Andy Harker

Nine Thirty Eight

What's God been teaching you recently?

A few things. One, that Tim Chester’s ‘Enjoying God’ book has really helped me with, is that the Jesus of the Gospel stories is the same Jesus who is alive and present with us now by his Spirit and that the way he relates to the stressed and sinful people he encounters in the pages of the Gospels is showing the same heart he has towards me right now. So I’m now reading the Gospel stories with a fresh excitement and starting to learn a more ‘present-tense’ relating to Jesus. And I’m also finding how helpful these stories are to share with people who’ve never heard them before –old and familiar as they may be to us, they’re living and radical and powerful.

What's the most interesting place you've visited and why?

I guess a visit is just a short term stay somewhere? Then it’d probably be a country in SE Asia. Certainly the most unfamiliar to me. Pig brain curry. Trees black with fruit bats. Public sign boards warning of punishments for ‘foreign stooges.’ Golden temples. A young man on a motorbike wearing a British premier league football shirt and a Nazi helmet. A beautiful country with a quietly courageous church.

If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

A number of 80s anthems spring to mind. Certainly ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ would often be appropriate as I walk into different rooms in my house. More seriously it would probably be ‘Before the Throne of God Above’. I’d like that at my funeral. So then it could be played not only when I walk into a room but when I’m carried in.
